Fulfill the Mission: A Study In 2 Timothy

Here’s what to know about our new series in 2 Timothy. The first letter of Paul’s to Timothy was a general issue of orders from a superior officer to a beloved junior officer, so beloved as a father and son are to each other. But this letter is different. It is the final will and testament of the martyr-maker who himself was about to become a martyr.

Paul uses his last breath, his last piece of paper, and his last dab of ink, to write to one person and proclaim one thing: Jesus. In the first chapter alone, Paul mentions Jesus or the Lord 12 separate times. He trusts in the “promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus” (1:1), and he prays for “Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord” over Timothy (1:2). He reminds Timothy not to be ashamed of their “Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (1:10).

Before, Paul was an enemy of God, killing those who followed Jesus and accusing them of blasphemy and slander. But he was the blasphemer and slanderer, the insolent opponent (1 Tim 1:13), the one who had it all wrong. Jesus literally knocked him off his high horse, called him to repentance, and rescued Paul from his own murderous and hate-filled existence. Jesus completely changed his life, and Paul, realizing the overwhelming covenantal love of God the Father, cannot help but proclaim the goodness and mercy of Jesus from that point on, Sanhedrin and emperors be damned. He cannot help but use the last little bit of time on earth to keep talking about Jesus to the person he loves the most, his spiritual son Timothy. He wants Timothy to keep growing as a man and a leader, to keep charging the hills with the gospel, to protect the purity of the message of Jesus from liars and thieves, and to become as impassioned as he is about the King of the Universe, who rescues traitors and adopts them (1 Tim 1:15).

If you had the same opportunity as Paul, knowing that at any minute you would be put to death because of your faith and proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ, what would you say? What would be the thing you most want to be remembered for? Who would you want to talk to most? If you were on death row for Jesus, who would you want to be the last person you ever saw or spoke with in this life? What instructions would you leave behind for your family, your work, and your legacy?

What would be the final words of your last breath? Catch up on 1 Timothy on our YouTube page.
