Rise up & build

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, “Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work.” — Nehemiah 2:17-18

As Nehemiah casts a vision for God’s people, explaining what God had called him to. The people responded enthusiastically, saying, “Let us rise up and build.”

This is how God’s missional campaigns begin.

God raises up a leader, who gathers resources and people, casts a vision, builds momentum, formulates a plan, and then it’s time to act. This was a pivotal moment for Nehemiah. Just a few months ago, he was unsure of what to do, relying solely on prayer. Now, over time, the Lord has strengthened and commissioned him, and brought others to join the mission.

What about you? Will you rise up and build? Will you labor with Jesus on mission in the city you live in?

Prayer

O Lord, use us mightily for your name sake. May we strengthen our hands for the work you’ve called us too. May we not grow weary in doing good, trusting, that we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Amen.
