in everything give thanks

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Christians should be the most thankful people on earth—not because we are better than anyone else, but because we recognize the mercy and grace of Jesus and have become recipients of it. We simply tell others about what we have received, desiring them to share in the blessing of knowing and being known by God.

This is why the Apostle Paul exhorts Christians to give thanks in all circumstances. No matter what we are going through, there is always cause to rejoice and moments to pause and be thankful. Thankfulness and praise are antidotes to bitterness, resentment, disillusionment, and prolonged discouragement.

As we continue our forty-day prayer campaign, may we cultivate the discipline of thankfulness and praise by pausing and reflecting on the kindness of our God toward us.

Prayer

O Lord, we confess that our hearts are prone to fear and not faith, prone to anxiety not trust, prone to harbor bitterness and not forgive; forgive us Lord and lead us today to reflect on your kindness that leads to repentance. Give us a heart of gratitude, a spirit of joy, and a posture of thankfulness today! Lift up our downcast spirits, give us life in your ways, and as we eat and drink may you receive the glory due your name.

Amen.
