when you fast
“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.” — Matthew 6:16
Tonight begins a 5 day church-wide fast. We are seeking God’s face, his presence, and blessing as we begin a new year. We believe God has a lot in store for us this year and he is the source of it all!
In Matthew 6:16, we see that Jesus expected his disciples to fast. When fasting we are not seeking the approval of others but we are seeking the face of God. The motive of our fasting matters. Jesus shows us here that our motive will match our reward when fasting.
Pray for God’s glory.
Seek God’s presence.
Yearn for God’s blessing.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the source of our joy; from you all blessings flow. We seek you in these days of our fasting. We abstain to gain more of you. Show yourself to us in might, and draw us closer to you over the next 5 days. Glorify yourself in our midst, leave us forever changed!
Amen.
